Info: Richard Cheyney the Ancestor of the Cheyney, Cheney, and Chaney families of Maryland and across the USA was a large land owner in Anne Arundel County Maryland amassing over 1100 acres of land. He was one of the largest land owners in the South River Area of Maryland. It is believed he settled in the province sometime around 1650. It is believed he arrived from Virginia by some due to his close interaction with others who had migrated from Virginia. There is no known documentation to prove this however. It is believed he was single when he arrived as there are no other females with the name Cheyney or other spelling variants documented. Shortly after arriving in Maryland he started to apply for land warrants and received Chaney's Hills lying on South River. His home on a hill away from the river provided protection and close access to the river for travel and trade. Chaney's Hills was excavated as part of an archeological dig as part of the Lost Colonies Project in Maryland. Many artifacts along with a layout of the original home were documented. Richard's other land assets included "Cheney's Neck" 100 acres, "Cheney's Resolution" 400 acres, "Cheney's Hazard" 100 acres. Richard was married twice. His first wife was named Charity. They had four children: Elizabeth, Richard (the elder), Anne, and Mary. He married his second wife Eleanor about 1668. Richard and Eleanor had seven children: Thomas, Charles, Sarah, Katherine, Charity, John, and Richard (the younger). Richard Cheyney died in South River, Anne Arundel, Maryland about 1685/1686. My line ties to Richard Cheyney through his son Charles Cheney.
