| Info: |
James Chaney was the son of Jacob Chaney and Sarah Midkiff. He was born about 1748 in New Brunswick (now Pittsylvania) County Virginia. Little is known about James other than a few records. He is listed in Tithables and Oaths of Alligence for Pittsylvania Virginia in 1777. He either died or left Pittsylvania Virgina as he disappears from records after 1777. The next known court record with James is May 1792 where his orphans Elisha and Moses are placed with overseers. It is believed that James may be the father of Obadiah Chaney of my line. Obadiah Chaney signed a marriage bond for an Elisha Chaney in 1807 in Green Kentucky. Also arrived in Pulaski County Kentucky around 1800 the same time as John Chaney son of Jacob Chaney. Sons of James are Elisha, Moses, and through circumstantial evidence Obadiah Chaney and possibly William (a.k.a William Henegar Chaney) again tied through DNA testing. John Chaney witnessed a deed of Sale for land for William Chaney in Tennessee leading to speculation that Obadiah John and William may have migrated from Pittsylvania through Tennessee where William settled then on to Kentucky arriving aroung 1800 in Pulaski County. |
