Chaney DNA

A few years ago in an attempt to confirm a suspected relationship for one of my ancestors I had a DNA test performed. From this testing I was able to confirm my suspicions as to a link ending many years of controversy.

Although it doesn't provide one with the documented written proof as traditional genealogists would want to see. It does give you the answer and can help focus your research to fill in the blanks.

I am not a DNA expert but from looking at my results and comparing with some of my new found relatives I can provide some suggestions on which testing to select.

I took the test to confirm on my fathers line. Lucky for me I have the same surname in which i was researching therefore as a male descendant in direct line it was perfect for me. If you happen to be female or not with the same surname I would recommend you find a male uncle, cousin etc. that can provide the sample. The testing kit usually consists of a cotton swab on a stick that you put into your mouth to swab the inside of your cheek. The sample then goes into a protective bag that is then sealed to prevent contamination. The sample is then mailed into the laboratory that will do the testing.

There are a couple of different DNA testing places with varying prices. I selected the Ancestry DNA Test since it was a little cheaper than another I was looking at during that time.

In looking at my results and those of others matching I would highly recommend you select the Paternal Lineage DNA 46 Marker Y-Chromosome Test. Do not get the 33 Marker test. Although it is a bit cheaper it does not have the accuracy of the Y-46 test. Some of the matches that came up in the database search for relatives were not related but had some commonalities in DNA. the Y-46 test is more accurate.
